It was awesome to learn about the FAAM Airborne Laboratory at Stockport’s Avro Heritage Museum this weekend! It’s a plane kitted out with instruments to take atmospheric measurements, gathering data for atmospheric air pollution, climate change, weather, and more!

Rest in peace to the wonderful Jane Goodall, who devoted her life to the study of chimpanzees, and conservation and humanitarian work 🕊️🐵🌳

“The antidote to climate anxiety is action!”

A cool display inside Lush stores shows what individuals can do to “create a climate of change”. I like how they’re not pulling punches about cooperate/government responsibility but coming at it from a collective action perspective.

Coral is suffering extensively due to #GlobalWarming. For an ecosystem, it’s less like a heatwave and more like a fever - even 2C is eventually fatal. Coral bleaching is a stress response before death. It’s the animal trying to kill its own micro algae to save itself, not knowing heat is responsible

Coral is not just a tropical plant - the UK is home to a class of coral called 'cold water coral'. It's a special type of coral because it doesn't have it's own microalgae; the polyps feed by extending their tentacles to catch plankton, krill and other small crustaceans floating nearby.

What we think of as coral is thousands of polyps making up one organism. Each shape is a different species. Coral has a symbotic relationship with an internal colony of microalgae (AKA phytoplankton) which photosynthesise and provide a food source.

We’re starting off the month of ocean conversation with Coral Reefs. Not many people know that #coral is an animal rather than a plant, and a #reef is an ecosystem of many different coral animals as well as rocks, fish, and other sea animals.

August’s spotlight is Ocean Conservation 🌊 This is an important topic to me as I grew up on an island - I actually got my powerboat license before my driver’s license! The #ocean is an essential part of our ecosystem but it’s facing many threats. Join me this month to hear more and what we can do.

A wonderful #SciArt exhibit up in Stockroom (Stockport) on ‘Emotional Biodiversity’, the wide spectrum of human responses to environmental problems. The short #SciFi film shows a future Stockport where the last human is collecting emotional artifacts from our time.

Here are some ways to combat burnout as an #Environmental activist from Makin Wellness. I’ve found regular exercise and boundaries to be the most helpful. Teaching your brain to switch off is a skill to learn and practise, and absolutely essential to maintaining a sustainable workload. #MentalHealth

This helpful diagram by @LindsayBraman (on instagram) and Alexandra Michel explains the causes of #Burnout.

It’s important we talk about this to support the health of fellow activists and reduce people needing to drop out of the field entirely.

Signs of burnout by @innsightful_ on instagram.

In #EnvironmentalActivism, it can be difficult to take care of yourself while fighting for the planet 🌍 This can lead to burnout. The first step to avoiding burnout is knowing the signs, and especially which ones you’re most susceptible to 👇

This is crazy - Louisiana, USA, is losing about 1 football field every 45 minutes from sea level rise caused by global warming. Residents of flooded towns are already America’s first climate refugees.

Carbon emissions from cars are no joke. Cars are responsible for almost 20% of ALL carbon emissions. Good to see Greater Manchester encouraging car sharing. Consider public transport as well!

Jacob Simon’s “Climativity” newsletter never fails to renew positivity about our world, even in weeks where it feels like our hard work is turning to dust. I learn a lot from him. This week: therapy dogs, chimp language, and renewable energy investment.

I found the coolest thing in climate science communication today - the EJ Atlas is an interactive map of stories about communities impacted by environmental hardship and climate change. It makes environmental justice visible and helps you learn about your own area. Check it out! ➡️ ejatlas.org

Chat GPT uses a huge amount of water for cooling. In an era where droughts and wildfires are getting worse and more common, this is a big deal for the environment. It’s also making clean, safe water harder to access since AI is using so much.

Use a search engine instead of Chat GPT when you can!

I’m very impressed that HALF of Gen Z plan to follow a meat-free diet in 2025! Overall, plant-based eaters in the UK are growing from 12% to 15% this year. Going vegan could reduce your carbon footprint from food by up to 73% (Poore et al.)

In light of the complete absence of good climate news today, here’s a baby seal.

Let’s remember who we’re working to protect.

TIL Sea Butterflies exist and they’re even cooler than you’re imagining!

Ocean acidification is damaging to them and their deep water habitats. Interesting new research ➡️ oceanographicmagazine.com/news/ocean-a...
