However I feel a large percentage of single player and games with self-scaling difficulties sort of force themselves to become exempt from this rule. Like how I imagine it is, for the most part, the lower a game's skill ceiling, the more time overall I will spend enjoying the actual game.

With games like lethal company and helldivers 2, I found that even though the game mechanics are relatively simple and for the most part, autopilot-able, it very quickly becomes about optimising because what else is there to do? The gameplay is fun but might not be captivating mentally.

Unfortunately I have never found a work around just because of how I view these games myself. There's definitely something to be said about like choosing a character that looks cool or feels good, rather than choosing a high tier character, but I feel a lot of people just like victory instead of fun

With fighting games (in my case specifically guilty gear strive and Tekken 8) I tend to find myself trying to optimise every little interaction instead of just doing whatever looks the coolest (which was what drew me to these games in the first place) and my enjoyment suffers more often than not.

I've found a lot more fun getting better at singleplayer games because the pressure to compete is gone.

I don't necessarily disagree with this or the rest of the thread, but I don't think this applies to every genre. I personally find myself having less fun the better I get at fighting games and simple little games like lethal company or helldivers.
