On a rocky point near Roberts Bay, Sidney BC, a dark-plumaged pelagic cormorant perches surrounded by several standing gray and white seagulls. On a rocky point near Roberts Bay, Sidney BC, a great blue heron is standing on an old log and preening itself. Nearby, to the heron's left and on slightly higher rocks are several gray and whith seagulls, all facing away from the heron, each with its head tucked under a wing A plastic tube feeder descends from the top middle of the picture. There are perches at the bottom on the left and right with access to feeding holes. A drab house finch perches on the left side. A chesnut-backed chickadee perches on the right. These are small birds. Chickadee description: The head is dark blackish-brown with white cheeks, the mantle is bright rufous-brown, the wing feathers are dark gray with paler fringes. The underparts are white to pale grayish-white, with rufous or pale gray flanks. Towards the bottom right, three birds are at a tube feeder. In the far background is the blue of Haro Strait, near Sidney British Columbia, and in the near background to the right of the feeder are green leaves and branches of a garry oak. The birds at the feeder are two house finches and a chestnut-backed chickadee. At the top left of the picture is a chestnut-backed chickadee in flight, its wing-tips blurred with motion.
