Geeking out on public policy, liberation theology, arts, food, and wanderlust.
US Citizenship ceremonies are overflowing with joy and pride in becoming American. Taking this moment away--and the thousands of dollars they've invested--is immensely cruel. I'm outraged for my neighbors from Burma, Afghanistan, Somalia, and more who are being discriminated against by this action.

American kids are almost twice as likely to die before reaching adulthood than kids in other high-income countries. This is unacceptable and completely preventable.

What a great local story. Happy Pride, everyone 🌈
Happy Pride everyone. I wrote a column about gay rights pioneer Thom Higgins, who called Minnesota home for most of his (too short) life. I really want more people to know the story of this remarkable guy. Please read and share (gift link)!
Raihala: Meet the Minnesotan who coined the term ‘gay pride’ and tossed a pie in Anita Bryant’s face
After the Stonewall riots in 1969 sparked the gay liberation movement, Thom Higgins gave it a name.

This makes me sad as a Christian with many LGBTQ+ friends. "Religious freedom" that requires the erasure of other human beings violates the love of God.

What's common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

Refugees resettling in the U.S. have to pay back the cost of their plane tickets.

Not everything you think should be said out loud.

Rep. Hortman's legacy is defined by public policies that respect the dignity of all people and protect the most vulnerable. An absolutely gutting and traumatic loss for our state.
Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government.

That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

Tell your legislators to vote NO on work requirements for Medicaid!
Work requirements hurt poor people AND are a waste of money.

Arkansas spent $26 million on administrative costs for work requirements — and saw no increase in employment.

Georgia’s program cost $40 million in one year — 80% of that went to administrative and consulting costs.

This is what community-first public safety looks like. Sgt. Toy and Officer Lee give students rides, hang out with them every week, and even show up in the hospital to show youth that they care. I'm so proud of our friends at The Urban Village for what they have built.

To put the OMB grant freeze in context, roughly 17.5% of Wisconsin’s revenue comes from federal grants in aid last I checked. Overall, federal grants account for roughly 36% of all state government budgets in US. In a number of states the federal share is even higher.

Trump orders a freeze of all federal grants & loans--i.e. student aid, Head Start, health clinics, public housing--starting tomorrow. This will hurt millions of people who rely on public services and thousands of workers employed with these grant funds.

Serious props to Marisa here who had this before anyone else I think.
NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs.

Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

Karen language classes were outlawed in public schools in Burma over 60 years ago. Now 300+ students are learning Karen in St. Paul. I'm so incredibly proud of all of the teachers and students making this possible.

Jingle Jangle is the most underrated Christmas movie of the century. I just watched it for the 3rd time in 4 years and it's a total delight.
