That motif in the lintel appears to be a fasces—literally an allusion to fascism.

All my neighbors have typical American lawns—turf mown weekly in diagonal stripes, with a few token trees or shrubs dotted about. So we stand out! I like to think we’re providing an oasis for wildlife. Birds visit in the hundreds, bees and butterflies beyond counting all season long.

Part of the >1 acre native grass & wildflower meadow filling my lot in southeastern Massachusetts. Started from seed last spring and will be left standing until early this spring. It’s a new neighborhood created on a former golf course.
