Bonfire last night. Lewes school kids get today off, but I don't, which seems unfair because they aren't the ones with the massive hangover, are they?

After we published the new specimen of #Spicomellus a few weeks ago, we were contacted by George Blasing, who said he'd bought some on the commercial market, and wanted to return it to Morocco. It arrived last week. Thanks George for doing the right thing in the name of science!

This totally flips our understanding of a whole bunch of things about ankylosaur evolution, but probably most significantly, we think that Spicomellus was using its armour for display as well as defence. What else is it doing with those neck spikes??

It also has *handle vertebrae*! These are fused tail vertebrae similar in morphology to those of Late Cretaceous ankylosaurs, indicating Spicomellus had a tail weapon. In the Middle Jurassic. Mental.

It's fair to say that not everyone was convinced by our identification. But now we have a much more complete skeleton, excavated by our UK-Moroccan-US team. Not only does Spicomellus have spikes fused to its dorsal ribs, it has metre-long spikes extending from a cervical half ring

It's me and @richardjbutler.bsky.social's annual trip to Edgbaston, during which we drink 10 pints and never remember what happened in the cricket we were watching. Today, all the wickets occurred while I was at the bar or in the loo, as always.

I talked at the @wildlifefestival.bsky.social this morning on top of the cliffs at Cuckmere Haven. I had such a nice time chatting to people that I missed my taxi and now I'm wondering how to get down 🤦♀️

I'm excited to receive Laura Poppick's debut book, Strata. Laura had the idea for it when we were out in the field in Wyoming together in 2019. In it, she reveals how the rocks tell us stories of past worlds. And that I swear a lot and smoke in the field. Also featuring @palaeojoe.bsky.social
