One of the many reasons we have Trump is that after the civil war we did not bring to trial Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Joseph E. Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregard, Nathan Bedford Forrest and Jefferson Davis. We let these traitors get away with what they did and it is the basis for the Trump years.
