Northumberland is my home. I'm fascinated by its coastal ecology and culture. I'm a Conservation Team volunteer with Northumberland Coast National Landscape and a HART volunteer with the National Trust.
I was thinking about the sea and how many lives it has taken. My photo doesn't do justice to the beautiful imagery generated by the words of George Mackay Brown, the voice of Orkney.

Babet has gone and a calm has settled over Beadnell Bay. Huge clumps of seaweed and collapsed dunes record the power of the storm and incessant frothing lines of breakers disperse the residue of pent up energy in the North Sea. #Northumberland

Stained-glass glaziers are a skilled bunch. Beautiful examples of their work are found in the most remote parishes. Here's a 19th C example found in the church of St Gregory the Great, Kirknewton - Northumberland. The passage of light through vibrant colours brings life to the darkest of spaces.

It didn't feel like the start of autumn on the North Northumberland coast today. The Redbarns dunes provide a great vantage point. I even managed to glimpse the weird sight of waves coming in at right-angles to each other over Islestone rock 😀

Reykjavik, a few years ago. I was rooted to the spot when I saw this mural. I didn't know then it was by the amazing Guido van Helten guidovanhelten.com/projects/kyi...

On a recent walk in the Cheviots (Northumberland) I came across this sign, which somehow manages to turn a perfectly reasonable request into a threat? 😯

It's Michaelmas day, the third 'quarter' day of the year. St Michael is one of the main angelic warriors, slayer of Satan and protector against the dark of the night (not against the Dark Knight otherwise he would be fighting Batman). He's well represented in #Northumberland

At last, a wonderfully clear and erudite book by @lucyfoulkes.bsky.social that discusses what can go wrong if we lose our ability to appreciate the distinction between mental health and mental illness.

For me the raw character of the #Shetland coast is expressed better in black and white. I've chucked in the oldest Stevenson lighthouse in Shetland (Sumburgh Head) as it has been in continuous use since its construction in 1821.

Contender for my favourite Trig Point. Cross the St Ninian tombolo in #Shetland and then take the gentle walk up to Loose Head for a magnificent view towards Foula, 26 miles away.

How do I say it's calm without saying it's calm? I post some peaceful reflections found in the tiny Cunningsburgh marina in #Shetland.

Beautiful clinker lines (overlapping planks) on this replica of the 9th century 'Skidbladner' ship discovered in a burial ground in Vestfold, Norway. In Old Norse Skíðblaðnir means 'assembled from thin pieces of wood' - you pretty much get what is says on the tin #Viking 😀
