Traffic Violence Rapid Response
@tvrr.bsky.social
Traffic deaths are preventable and we will prevent them
IG: rapidrevoltteam M: @RapidResponseTeam@sfba.social
Oakland, Bay Area
https://oakrapidresponse.org/
We call on @cityofoakland.bsky.social elected leaders like @charleneforoakland.bsky.social, OPD, OFD, and OakDOT to treat our city's traffic safety crisis as a public safety crisis and accelerate efforts to make our streets safe for everyone to use at all times of the day

According to neighbors it used to be safe enough for kids to play in the middle of these streets, but now even crossing one risks their life

If planned traffic calming for E 16th like 4-way stops, traffic circles, and speed cushions had been added already then they could have saved a life on Friday

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence

21 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year and we are trending to 29 by the end of the year, only 1 less than last year

These injuries and deaths are preventable

Police Commission is considering updating the OPD Pursuit Policy to allow more dangerous high speed chases

High speed chases all too often end in tragedy and death for our neighbors

Join tonight at 6:30pm to insist OPD keep 50mph limit and supervisor approvals

Residents told us multiple people have been hit by left turning cars here

Broadway is on the High Injury Network and an upcoming project addresses many safety issues, but 8th needs a dedicated walk cycle and pedestrian median islands on both sides of the street

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence

19 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year, with untold numbers of others whose lives have been irreparably harmed

These injuries and deaths are preventable.

Yes, 55th and Shattuck was our first vigil 😢

Good point. This is more properly 52nd and Shattuck.

The labeling of this intersection is as confusing as crossing it.
August 21, 2025 at 9:28 PM
There is currently no safe way for a cyclist to cross this high volume and high speed intersection

We call on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's elected leaders, OPD, OFD, and OakDOT to treat the traffic safety crisis as a public safety crisis and accelerate efforts to make our streets safe for everyone

On Saturday a driver hit and killed women in her 50s as she was biking across 51st at Shattuck 😢

Our hearts go out to her life cut short as she was doing something as simple as riding her bike, and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends

We know physical interventions will prevent deadly collisions because we've seen those interventions already work wonders

It is so very crucial that we install those safety projects without delay, especially on high injury streets where we know fatalities will happen again

Sorry for the late reply, but the section of Grand Ave north of 580 and south of Mandana is no longer getting protected bike lanes despite being protected bike lanes being on the bike plan
August 15, 2025 at 3:24 AM
We have an opportunity to make Grand safer, more accessible, and more vibrant

Please tell the City your own story about how you would like to safely travel on Grand, and urge them to follow adopted safety plans and community expectations for safer Grand Ave

Calling all Oaklanders who live, work, or travel in Grand Lake!

Please email OakDOT and your councilmember TODAY about the upcoming Grand Ave safety project

Grand is on the High Injury Network, which means it is one of the 8% of streets responsible for 60% of Oakland's severe and fatal collisions

Our hearts break as we gather and mourn our neighbor, Dr Marvin Boomer.

He was a light throughout Oakland and the world.

More than 30 people have been killed in traffic crashes on International Boulevard in the last five years. Oakland and AC Transit have a pilot in place, which added flex posts to parts of the road. These changes have clearly not done enough to prevent tragedy - harder interventions are needed.

Sunday, April 13th at 1PM, we will join neighbors at Grand Ave and Park View for a commemorative protest to honor Michael Burawoy and all lives lost to traffic violence

Bring signs, flowers, candles, your friends, family and neighbors, and all your feelings 😢

The draft guidelines would also push first to move bikes to "different corridors," an approach widely disparaged for putting bike routes on winding streets and leaving riders unprotected on main roads to reach their destinations. (AC Transit has also been angling against Complete Streets at MTC)
March 13, 2025 at 12:03 AM
Michael's death was a preventable tragedy

Grand has been on Oakland’s High Injury Network for years as one of the 6% of streets with over 60% of collisions

Senior centers, churches, and schools are separated from Lake Merritt by speeding drivers treating excessively wide Grand as a highway onramp
February 5, 2025 at 7:20 AM
People stopped by all evening to leave flowers, notes, and candles for Professor Burawoy, and neighbors joined with their own horror stories of crossing Grand Ave with their kids or their grandparents
February 5, 2025 at 7:20 AM
A driver killed our neighbor Michael Burawoy last night while he was crossing Grand Ave in the crosswalk in front of Fairyland

Our hearts reach out to his family, friends, students, and everyone else mourning this tremendous loss
