I survived 2024 with my sanity, not quite intact but hanging in there 😅. At least now I know there isn't much 2025 can throw at me that I can't take. I only wish I could go into the new year with my Loki beside me. Will miss him always 💔. Happy New Year to everyone! Let's hope it is a kind one!

Spark by @sarahbethdurst.bsky.social is a great middle grade read for shy and quiet kids. It's about finding the courage to speak up about what is right. And there is a great relationship between a girl and her dragon! ❤️
Highly recommended! 📚👍

Had a lovely time at the SCBWI Benelux retreat this weekend. It was inspiring to listen to writers talk about their ideas and seeing illustrators create amazing art. Going on retreats might be my favourite part of being a writer. Can I become a professional retreater? 😅

It's been a hectic couple of weeks. So I'm happy I've escaped it all for the SCBWI Benelux retreat in Spa (yes, it's where spas originated, in case you were wondering). Writing, wellness and walks in the woods. And of course best of all, exchanging with other children's writers 😊 ❄️📝

Here I am innocently re-reading Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi, thinking that a funny, whimsical middle-grade fantasy is just what I need to escape this dystopian reality, when I'm rudely reminded of our current predicament... A demon though? That would explain things 🤔

Loved Kiki Kallira Conquers a Curse by Sangu Mandanna, the 2nd book about Kiki, who suffers from anxiety and is the hero of a fantasy story. I wish I could have read these as a kid when I used fantasy books as an escape. I might have realised I suffered from anxiety 20 years earlier... #kidlit 📚👍

While waiting for feedback from a beta reader for my middle grade WIP, I'm jotting down ideas about the protagonist for another MG fantasy, this one inspired by Finnish mythology. And thought I'd show off my summery Moomin notebook 😊.

Slightly surprising quote for a sugar packet. Would have expected something sweet or cheerful. This means something like "Anyone is powerful enough to do evil" according to G translate. Wasn't expecting evil to feature with my afternoon tea.

What is everyone's favourite beach read genre? Mine is crime fiction. Just finished The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths, the first Dr Ruth Calloway mystery. Good mystery with great characters, set in a haunting landscape. Will continue with this series! 💙📚 #booksky #summerreading #crimefiction

Finally read the Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers. Great character driven sci-fi . And I can see why they call it hopepunk. I wish one day humans would learn to communicate with and accept other cultures as well as these aliens do.

Loki might be 11 and a half but he still loves playing with a stick. This is his "throw the stick already!" face. Hypnotising him with a stick is also a good way to get him to look in the direction of the camera 😅🐕 #dog.

Spell Sweeper by @leefodi.bsky.social is my favourite book so far this year, and I've read some great ones! But none of them could compete with the idea of a spell sweeper, the strong humourous character voice, or the theme. And I could not put it down! Would love another book about Cara! #kidlit 📚👍

Year's first breakfast on the terrace! ☀️🌱 😊 If the contents of the bowl look unappetising they really aren't. Oats with banana and chia seeds is yummy! 😋

About 30 years ago I had this strange book idea about a word collector with a shelf full of words inside bottles. Today I finally finished the first draft 🥹. It took me a while. Of course the first draft is just one small step on a long writing journey... 😅 #middlegrade #writing

Sitting in the garden reading while Loki chills on the grass. Spring is finally here! 🌱 🌷🪻☀️ PS. The book is Artezans: the forgotten magic by L.D. Lapinski and it's great so far! #middlegrade #mglit #kidlit #dog

Loki gave himself a Christmas present. He found some poor child's lost Peppa pig ball in the woods this morning and claimed it as his own. Now this 11-year old wants to play with it all day long 😅❤️. #Christmas #dogsofbluesky

Merry Christmas! Hopefully everyone has piles of books under the tree! 📚🎄. I'm enjoying the day by rereading the Dark is Rising for the first time since childhood ❤️.

Highly recommend It Found Us by @lindsayncurrie.bsky.social. A spooky middle grade ghost story, complete with a graveyard setting and a very creepy ghost, but also a well developed and tense mystery, all driven by the actions of a group of relatable characters. #middlegrade 📚👍

If you love atmospheric and fantastical middle grade adventures, and have inexplicably not read any Eerie-on-Sea mysteries by @thomastaylor.bsky.social, do read them! With an eerie coastal setting, complete with monsters and quirky characters, they are the perfect cosy autumn read. #MiddleGrade 📚👍
