At best, they are making a new one. But typically, and probably more feasibly, they are just doing it so they don't lose the trademark. Fairly common for a company to re-up an IP.

Its much easier to design for one type of card and it would be frustrating for many consumers if they bought one type of card only to learn you now need to change out microSD cards in order to play different games. The new cards have a higher speed and are more in line with the upgraded specs.
