spent this week learning to use SIMD intrinsics with everyone's favorite fractal. I'm surprised at how the numbers turned out: between the 8-wide AVX instructions and 12 CPU threads, we can get pretty close - within 1/8x! - to the compute shader's performance

one cool feature of direct raytracing is that you can model full-blown lens systems - in this case, the famous Helios-44M lens used for the new Batman movie and Dune. the bokeh swirl in the background is really satisfying to watch!
