The last time Rin ever saw Meguru was right before winter break. He’d long forgotten what happened between the two of them, because he was used to running away. That was just how they were. Meguru had hugged him then. Meguru loved hugging people. He always said that it let you touch the deepest parts of someone's heart. But Rin hated being hugged. If he was hugged for too long, too many ambivalent feelings would rise within him. It was ambiguous—the flavor of pickled cucumbers devolving into ochazuke and bream in his mouth. It was disgusting and delicious. He was a soldier on the battlefield, yet he was taken down by a hug. Unforgivable. They weren't lovers, so it was just a hug. But they weren't friends either, because it wouldn’t have felt like they were crossing a line. Both friends and lovers could have acted more openly, but only a simple hug was allowed in this relationship. Their embrace left a sour taste, and that was enough for Rin to surrender. Wrapped under the shiny facade of a holographic candy wrapper, everything it reflected broke into patches of iridescent light. If you could wipe away all the childish impulses, their youthful inexperience, and the silence that followed, what remained between them was nothing more than a single hug. Meguru wordlessly opened his mouth, and left him.

Once school was over, Meguru would pull at him and ask whether he wanted to go eat fried chicken or strawberry cream cake. If Rin said he wanted fried chicken, they would end up having strawberry cream cake. It was actually quite delicious. The fresh cream and fluffy sponge cake were cool in his mouth, and when the wind blew around them as they ate outside, it felt like there was something special in the air. After a few bites, Meguru would begin to play around; swiping at Rin’s strawberries, attempting to smear cream across Rin’s face. Only, he never succeeded, because Rin’s retaliations meant it resulted in a mess on his own face. Moments later, Rin would take his shot and call him “a stupid Bobcut.” And after that, Meguru would cling onto him and follow him home. Rin’s protests were half-hearted, because Meguru trailed after him no matter how many times he objected. Meguru would whine, “Rin-chan, just hold my hand for a little while, okay?” Who knows which one of them reached out first, but their hands were joined either way, and Rin wasn’t going to be the one to let go.

i'm working very slowly on a couple of kabumisu translations!
Milsiril hadn’t expected the noodles to be so pleasantly chewy, coated with the perfect amount of steaming broth. The taste was foreign to her—Milsiril recognized that there were many spices and complex flavors, but she could not name a single one. The mild heat reawakened her dormant appetite, and her eyes widened in surprise. “...” Milsiril was suddenly unsure how to respond. “So Mithrun can actually cook. Is this one of Melini’s specialties?” “No.” Mithrun also took a sip of broth. “This is the cuisine of Utaya.” Were she unaware that Mithrun possessed no sense of humor, Milsiril might have believed it was a cruel joke. Kabru quickly cut in. “I was nostalgic for my mother’s food, so I tried recreating it! Though it’s not quite the same, it’s pretty good, right?” However, Misilril could no longer remember what foods the people of Utaya had enjoyed either. She tried to recall the battle from the distant past. By the time she arrived with the rest of the Canaries, Utaya was already wracked with devastation. She had long forgotten whether or not she tried the local specialties. During the war, food was merely a means to ward off hunger. She was loath to revisit those painful memories, much less take note of such an unimportant detail. Yet those two are different, Milsiril thought to herself. Kabru and Mithrun can speak openly of Utaya. And so she realized with no small surprise that, throughout the years Kabru had been in her care, her child had never mentioned that he missed his mother’s cooking.
