And maintaining the good stuff is a battle. Too ambitious and you risk overwhelm and overwork. Not ambitious enough and you’re underpurposed

The kind that makes you annoying at parties and seem a little crazy? That’s the good stuff.

Let’s say there’s a chunk that’s drudgery, sure. That’s boring and it sucks. And there’s a chunk of work thats interesting but that people have boundaries with and they go home at the end of the day and think little else of it.

But the work that possesses you, that informs the rest of your being?

Being monomaniacal about a thing, a single domain, is awesome. There are few things that compare to pushing those boundaries.

And it’s awesome when you’re in an environment of play where you can get to do that. But the vast majority of work that happens is not that.

Ultimately my solution looked great, but relied on the axle it was holding up at different points to also provide structure for it. My boss at the time had one comment:

“That’s a very elegant solution. Now build something that works for more than five minutes”

Reminds me of a time at my first job when I was assigned to build a scale Dreadnought out of erector set parts. I spent hours getting the housing for the propeller engine to work with the smallest number of supporting parts. I wanted to show off the moving parts, not obscure with supports.

Feeling very inspired post Stripe Session. A few things stuck with me, the biggest one is that elegant solutions make engineers happy, but brute forcing by throwing a ton of resources at something works sometimes. And an over preference for elegance can hamstring your thoughts

Ime (have not been subject to, but was subject tangential to a few times) the perp of these things tends to like using sacred social scripts. People really dont like those being misused

Sounds like your friend wasn’t the first and won’t be the last. Might be good to wait it out and let other folks catch on when they can. And nudge people along on the edges where it makes sense to
