Last night along with @thefabians.bsky.social we hosted our panel event on stigma.

It was great to hear the Minister, and so many of the audience questions emphasise that humanising the system is critical to any reform. Too often people are met with suspicion and control instead of support. #Lab25

However, currently 68% of people claiming social security feel ashamed of seeking support and nearly half of claimants say the system makes them feel undeserving of support.

Along with the anti-poverty charity, @z2ktrust.bsky.social, we’ve led on an open letter to the Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms. We're asking him to take some key steps to make sure that involvement is genuine.

Yesterday, MPs voted to reduce support for people unable to work by over £200 a month.

From April 2026 the health element of Universal Credit will be halved for anyone who becomes sick. This will mean even more people are going without essentials. It makes no sense.

Tomorrow MPs will vote again on plans to cut over £200 a month from people too ill to work.

Like our NHS, our social security system should be there for all of us when we need it.

As a society, supporting Disabled people to live independently AND protecting people who are too sick to work is the right thing to do. The government still has a chance to show us they are committed to doing that.

Later today MPs will vote on a new law which, if passed, will cut vital support for sick and disabled people. Even with the concessions the gov. has made to the PIP and Universal Credit Bill, huge cuts are still on the table for new claimants, who will receive less support to meet the same needs.

More than 100 Labour MPs are trying to stop a law needed to introduce cuts to health and disability benefits in its tracks.

As a society, protecting people who are too sick to work and supporting Disabled people to live independently is the right thing to do.
