What an excellent day, and an excellent Roast.

TIL that the City of London *technically* doesn’t use Albertus on its street signs - used since 1988 and updated in 2025

An un-fun discovery on a Friday afternoon - Newham Cabinet papers that include the option of cutting the team I work in by 50%.

After 6 years, finished this deliciousness. Any recommendations for something new?

Oh shit, Imgur no longer works in the UK. That might break a lot of things across the internet for UK users

If we're doing pie in the sky New Town ideas... how about North Weald? Could cheaply extend the Central line for 10,000+ new homes on this site.
There's enough land to keep the air ambulance and industrial uses on site, while buffering the existing village. Bet the NIMBY pushback would be intense...

Hello new DLR train!

Frankfurt is an odd place - dull yet interesting. Not sure how I feel about the Neue Altstadt (an architectural pastiche of the old town)

Because of a Deutsche Bahn shitshow (anyone surprised?) we got to Frankfurt in the silliest way possible - taking a TGV from Mannheim as if it was a local train 😂
(Also Ludwigshafen Hbf is bleak and ugly, and the Siemens Mireo aren't much better)

Speyer itself is very pretty - not a big town, but very charming. In the traffic lights - the green man is eating a pretzel!

The rest of the museum had great variety - cars, motorbikes, old steam trains, military jets, civilian planes, boats, a submarine - and a unique Soviet Union "Buran" spaceplane!

Technik Museum Speyer - the highlight was the Lufthansa Boeing 747-230, which is mounted 20 metres up in the air! Standing on a 747 wing that high is very disconcerting!
Inside, it varies from completely stripped out (so you can stand in the cargo hold) to 2002-spec First Class upstairs!

Mainz - a pretty little town on the Rhine with a busy heart.
September 3, 2025 at 10:18 PM
Thru Karlsruhe on the way back to Mainz - a surprisingly pretty town with very comprehensive tram-train network!

Freiburg - a super pretty town, filled with little streams (Bächle) that run along all the streets.
Didn't get to Vauban this time tho!

To Germany on ICE - 320kmh on LGV Est is very impressive. Love the quality of service, Bordrestaurant and decent beer is much better than the TGV Cafe, and the seat is pretty good too!

Hôpital Bicêtre (I like the wooden frame ceiling), L'Haÿ-les-Roses (love the light artwork by Studio Nonotak), Maison Blanche (the artwork had broken in the wind 🥲)

Chevilly-Larue (architect Brunet Saunier Architecture) - oh dear. Unfinished bits of the station, unfortunate colour choice of browns, yellows and "bronze" (cigarette stained vibes), and public art by Gerda Steiner and Jurg Lenzlinger (incomprehensible due to size, imo)
September 3, 2025 at 8:02 PM
Thiais–Orly (architects Valode & Pistre, Denis Valode) was attractive, if very overbuilt - I like the suggestion of the arch in the architecture. The public art by Lyes Hammadouche is forgettable, frankly - 4 sculptures hanging in the station concourse.

Line 14 extension south - Orly Airport is beautiful (designed in-house by airport operator Groupe ADP), with clever use of ceiling louvres to create beautiful textured lighting. Nice public art too (by @vhils.bsky.social)

The new Line 11 stations - I liked the public realm and surprisingly slender viaduct at Coteaux Beauclair and the new apartment buildings above station entrances. The fit and finish left something to be desired though - stations looked unfinished in places, over a year after opening!

Some new Métro exploration - Saint-Denis - Pleyel opened in time for the Olympics last year. It's huge, I've been in smaller airports! Eventually it will serve 4 lines, handling 250k passengers/day with its 56 escalators!
Architecture wise - ceilings are surprisingly low, liked the platform murals

Running into Ash and Rochelle in Paris was surreal and amazing! The downpour that followed, not so much 😅

A brief thread from a long weekend on the Continent - a brief stroll around the Paris Olympic/Paralympic Village. About to open, very dense - a perfect use of the river and the mature trees to soften the site.
