I can't comment on the motives.

I always think there's nuance in this argument.

It is a worry, especially after what happened with the twins in Asia that were genetically modified to be HIV resistant but who are now suffering as a result.

That said, I think the money would be better spent on developing gene therapy cures. CRISPR technology now means we can edit viruses to deliver genetic treatments and cure some genetic disorders that way. That's a more ethical and significantly safer approach.

I think, more than likely, developing treatments for cystic fibrosis, a devastating illness that leads to premature deaths in children and young adults. My cousin has been told it is unlikely her son will reach 20 is unlikely due to the type of cystic fibrosis he has. It's rare he's not in hospital.
