Antonia Lisboa from CUT Brazil speaks, saying workers cannot be complicit in genocide and ethnic cleansing. Workers' movements support the UN position on a two state solution, just as the Brazilian govt does - so what we're working on is concrete actions to bring an end to the current massacre.

Nazma highlights the lack of rights for workers and their representatives, even 12 years after the Rana Plaza disaster which killed over 100 women workers. No one has been held to account for that, and the abuses continue.

But again, we need to use our trade agreements to defend workers, and to improve union engagement on oversight bodies (domestic advisory groups) for trade agreements to ensure workers' interests are reflected, he says. But we also need info from the south to work with.

Nazma Akter from Bangladesh's SGSF highlights the threat to women workers ofn Trump's 35% tariff's on Bangladesh, which is scaring companies away and harming jobs. The worker will be the victim. Fairness has been difficult enough to achieve for women workers, now it will be worse.

Claes-Mikael from the @etuc-ces.bsky.social answers that we need to practice better democracy in order to protect it. Like Luc, he says we need a better trade system - for him this requires strong & enforceable labour chapters in trade deals to protect workers. And we need a shift...

On Tuesday (19th) evening, the TUC, with the Argentina Solidarity Campaign, with hear from speakers from Argentina, who will tell us more of the impact of Milei’s chainsaw & of his bigotry, and of how workers have united to ensure that his misrule does not go unopposed. 10/11
November 18, 2024 at 5:20 PM
Indeed unions have driven opposition to all these policies, succeeding in slowing new laws & persuading Congress to at least water them down – but now Milei has fewer checks & balances on his power, & international solidarity is needed more than ever. 9/11
November 18, 2024 at 5:19 PM
Unions have taken to the streets to protest these anti-work laws, claiming they “grant absolute power to companies and jobs without rights to workers” - Milei has come closer to absolute power himself, as Congress has given him a year’s carte blanche to change/make laws without accountability. 8/11
November 18, 2024 at 5:18 PM
Milei has also attacked workers’ rights, giving more power to employers over unions, & making it easier - & cheaper - to dismiss workers. He has also reinforced the idea of small groups of ‘independent workers’ who have no employment protections  at all. 7/11
