Thank you for bringing up this issue! I've always been curious about it too, but I simply imagined it was caused by the huge influence of puritanism in the USA (as usual) and never got into it

-cause the average experience here is more lighthearted for the most part. I'm pretty sure that most of our priests would be outdone at being fundamentalist by the average religious woman from Texas

Talking from my personal experience being raised catholic in Italy, the shame "aspect" of religion is way less highlighted than it seems to be for American Catholics. I no longer associate with the Church but it always surprises me to see catholicism being so strongly associated to shame and guilty-
