Meanwhile you can look at something like MastersEX and they GET it. Shading and slight gradients being limited to certain parts of the models to maintain the sharper feel and emphasize the linework, The minimal facial shading. Things like hair highlights being baked into the model.

Then you see the ingame visuals and they're all washed out and grainy with lots of soft gradual shading rather than the art's hard shadows. The ears have lighter shadows than the neck for example which is to show how the skin there is thinner, but in this context its uncanny to me.

Look at how the art for this game looks. Its got lively saturated colors, solid black linework hard edged solid shading. It's very simple but lively and fun. The character's faces are simplified to to be cute to look at with minimal shading and detail like the mouths lacking depth or lines for noses
