The GFS is even worse in the Philly area, actually twice as worse (Snowiest sounding run for every recognized precipitation event with snow inside of 192hrs:

It is too prone to these all-time record high single snowfall events, more so than either the European or Canadian. If its purpose in life is to signal a major (not necessarily all-time record breaking) snow storm, than its mission has been accomplished.

Tomer, excellent analysis. I do like a weakening (as in rising) -NAO as an indicator for a stronger storm. The current version of the GFS has been the poorest snowfall performer for PHL over the last couple of winters, nearly always for overforecasting snow inside of 96hrs.
