31 miles as the crow flies is around 50 miles using roads or public transport, and can be up to 2 hours in a car or 3 hours on public transport. Plus the return trip.

Less reliance on the current US govt seems logical, agreed. But would the alternative be EU only or can Canada join? Would all current members (except one) jump ship at the same time or would some be members of both? Would tolerating the US be better than potentially antagonising them?

While I agree with your sentiment, “It is permissible in English to end a sentence with a preposition” is much simpler and less contrived. I’m sure there are better examples though.
