Flying is still the cheapest and fastest, but with an Interrail pass, the difference in cost is getting less. And for me, investing extra time to take the train is worth it for the environmental benefits vs. flying.

I was looking into trains to visit my parents in Naples. Derby to Naples, a distance of 2,250 km.
Driving: 2-3 days
Train: 22h inc. waiting time
Plane: 8h inc. getting to/from airports and check-in
Train is likely to go below 20h with the opening of the Turin-Lyon high speed line in a few years.
