20 yrs ago, when I applied for a job at the Institute for Humane Studies, the 2nd stage of the interview process was to create the curriculum for a weeklong summer seminar. I called mine sth like Exploring Western Ideas, set it in St. Louis & included a visit to the arch. This is my 1st time here.

Rewriting history the wrong way: forcibly erasing history in an attempt to prop up feeble-minded men with perverse notions of what should be.

The right way: speculative history that explores “what if” scenarios that showcase what could be if we appeal to our better angels.

Tonight I was reminded that some folks fail to apprehend this flag as a symbol of enlightenment, of our growing understanding of the full spectrum of humanity, and of our ever-expanding ability to embrace pluralism. This flag represents the best of us. Love all, serve all.

When you look at a $2 bill or the Declaration of Independence, remember how these brave men battled tyranny: w/ their words & the courage of their convictions as they functionally signed their own death warrant, standing fast & true in principled opposition to a merciless despot.
