Even the most earnest politicians (assuming there are a few), when they say things like “I believe in the American people”, must know they’re lying to themselves. It’s purely aspirational. Because most of the American people are fucking stupid.

The percentages are interesting, but is there good data on the totals, i.e., how many left in each time period?

Now it’s more of a headline.

It would be better to express deficits and surpluses as a percentage of GDP (or maybe some other measure of the overall economy). Then we would still see a contrast between Democrats and Republicans, but we could also see how much deficits are increasing in real terms.
