FWIW I don’t think the theory of him being most people 2nd favorite candidate and then became most popular as it winnowed doesn’t really conflict with that theory. Just that there was never time to challenge that best alternative status before shit hit the fan.

Mostly that Biden was just winning by plurality but never had a commanding lead until things started getting bad in Feb/March and the speed of the consolidation around him once he got that lead. Haven’t done studies of the polls and results on a timeline with infections or anything.

I don’t think you can take much from the 2020 primaries. They were still pretty wide open until COVID got really bad and then everyone coalesced around Biden pretty quickly over electability concerns. “Can Bernie or Warren beat Trump?” took on new meaning as infections rose.
