I 100% agree with and endorse this thread but the problem is LOTS of people who write for a living actually don't like writing or thinking very much.

I wanted the Posey family to have to stay for legal reasons and set up a Schitts Creek: Thailand spinoff

VT Law used to have a general practice program for people planning to be small town lawyers.

I suspect we're is going to have to grow out of Twitter's "one big cocktail party with billions of guests" model but Mastodon is like v1.0 of an alternative. Maybe bsky will find a way to be best of both worlds.
December 8, 2024 at 1:30 PM
Bsky was heading in the same direction, with maybe an attempt to build a different culture, but hitting their growth curve before they meaningfully federated forced their hand (somewhat painfully if you were around then) towards "Twitter 2014 clone"

...I find the local community aspect to be very thin, and the emergent moderation through federation and social norms to be very ideologically uniform an relatively restrictive. not necessarily a bad thing! but I think it reduces engagement and makes the platform seem kind of bland.

lol I feel very differently about this it's weird. You're right, the *idea* of mastodon is a bunch of federated local first communities, with no centralized moderation. and I find this idea very attractive! in practice, though...

*conflicted

My thoughts about this are super conflicting because I think the technology is fascinating but I basically assume that all legal
software will be terrible based on years of experience watching people pay too much for awful case management software when they'd be better off with a few spreadsheets

I find it does a better job at spitting out boilerplate than a lot of first year associates, and I perversely enjoy arguing with it. But it's basically just distilling stuff that's been published on law firm blogs. I'm waiting to see what the bots produce when they're actually finetuned on case law.

personally I kind of like the way swiss cheese hardens into a stretchy shell around the burger patty, even though it departs from a certain ideal of gooeyness that the burger oriented cheeses are pursuing
