Honest thoughts on Mouthwashing. Spoiler warning and cw for cannibalism and SA.
Alright, for starters, as a warning, I will not be censoring Jimmy. I get that he's pretty bad and it's a thing people do but I would say that what I'm writing would be ironic if I did it. Also CW for the subject matter, including sexual assault, cannibalism, etc. So a lot of what l've heard about the game already was on Twitter, and to be honest? People made out the story with Anya and being pregnant from being raped by Jimmy to be a much bigger plot point than it seemed to me. I do think it's still pretty important, since it highlights more of Jimmy's selfishness, but it almost felt shoehorned in? If that makes sense. Like I'm worried that me saying this would make me seem insensitive but it definitely seemed to be added as a "here is another really bad thing Jimmy did" and as a way to connect him to Anya. Which sucks, because Anya is a character I would've liked to see more developed, but I understand that something had to work plot-wise. Also I like that it adds to a theme of being a woman in a v male-dominated workspace. I discussed male-dominated workspace. I discussed this with a friend of mine who interpreted it that Curly also was sexually assaulted by Jimmy because of the ambiguous nature of the pilltaking scenes being blacked out (given the fact that Jimmy did cannibalize part of his leg and then make him eat it, l would not put that past him). While this is a really interesting interpretation and l almost agree, it wouldn't add onto the theme of the Tulpar being a boys' club with a bro code, given that Curly didn't really take much action when he learned of Anya being pregnant besides "talking to him about it." I also want to highlight that Jimmy is a super interesting character. Yeah, he's a rapist, but I don't think that disqualities him to be a completely morally gray character. I'm running out of character count in this message so I'll go into this later if asked, but I love that this game gave me an appreciation for fiction that explores dark topics and morality. Also Jimmy as a character is incredibly interesting because it is clear how selfish he is (I would even in this case, awful as it is, describe sexual assault as selfish. Which again I don't want to downplay. Like he keeps fucking things up for his own gain, but then puts curly in the cryopod instead of hisself? I saw the Wikipedia page describe it as an "I can fix this" attitude when everything's already gone to hell. But his last action appears to be that of selflessness? Until you realized he was going to murder suicide everyone anyway by crashing the Tulpar into an asteroid and we don't know that even if Curly does get rescued, he would have a good quality of life. So it's almost like a "I get to kill myself and end the pain and you can't" scenario Additionally I think I like the theory that Jimmy also raped Curly but after the crash. The pill taking scenes really do have that vibe with the gagging and sobbing, and also the forced self cannibalism could also be symbolic?

Did some cyanotypes
A big blue doily that has been Cyanotyped. You cannot really make out what exactly the patterns are, but the middle is an anemone, and there are horseshoe crabs and starfish on the corners. A wooden Cyanotype. You can see sea anemones on it. A wood Cyanotype in the shape of an anchor. It’s hard to make out the darker shapes of anemones.
