And this is how I easily remember the brightness hierarchy.

The brightness in between these 6 main colors are roughly fluid and the numbers can be used to compare them with each other.
Example: Red (5) and Yellow (1) is Orange (3). This color is roughly as bright as Green (3).

Your strategy seems fruitful.

Restart small! Just a pen and a paper. Maybe draw only a simple eye. Or a head. Doesn't have to be good, but only enough to make you happy. You don't have to prove anything to anyone 😊
