Bread or chopping boards being lined up first? It has taken us a couple of months but we are finally using the bread boards that arrived before Christmas. They looked too good to use! Awaiting the chopping boards - hope we don't have the same issue when they get here.

Good to see you have chosen wisely! GO HAWKS!

A petrel-head instead?

You can track volunteer opportunites here: www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kakapo-recovery/get-involved/volunteer

Obviously a reasonably big breeding season requires many more hands and volunteers are required. As they know when a breeding season will occur the call goes out several months in advance. Volunteers often do a two week stint. So that would be a possibility.

Easy .... donate to the Kakapo Recovery Programme! But working with kakapo is another story - the team comprises a small hardy band with specialised skills from within the Department of Conservation. Vacancies arise occasionally.

I have not caught up with who she mated with this year (maybe not detected?) but I have her just singly mating with Te Kingi in 2022.
February 7, 2026 at 6:10 AM
Class of "11 yet again! Waa and Stella support her pretty well too.

Cool to have you Alison!

Thanks for the update Andrew! OK the class of 11 is coming through! Stella's nest has finally been found to join Atareta, Waa and Waikawa and Tia has mated, I think for the first time after returning from a long sojourn on Hauturu. Just waiting on Hakatere now!

For great info like this I'd suggest listening to Alison Ballance's wonderful podcast The Kakapo Files on Radio New Zealand!

I think edge works just as well!

I don't have full figures for Te Kakahu but in '22 Dusky, Makorea and Ninihi I've got as all having 3 infertile eggs each. Part of the reason I'm team Class of 11 is there are proven producers and five of the six females are on Pukenui. So how much is due to the birds and how much the environment?
January 31, 2026 at 9:08 AM
Woohoo! Not sure if they were the final figures but I had egg fertility about 60% for Pukenui last time (10% more than WH). Currently I have Pukenui at 16 fertile from 18 with 20 TBD. Beginning to wonder if Pukenui is a better breeding island (though worse for the recovery team) than WH!

Go the class of '11!
January 31, 2026 at 8:34 AM
Are there nests you are still looking for where the bird's activity has dropped. I'm thinking in particular of Stella, early mating with Horton but no nest. Was the mating unsuccessful this year (it has been good in the past)? She is part of the usually prolific class of 11. Will she mate again?
January 28, 2026 at 8:31 AM
Cool! But typo still spotted so all's well with this small pocket of the world!
January 26, 2026 at 11:32 PM
Ahh, it is you Paul! The polite, restrained and almost passionless commentary up until now made me think your account had been taken over by a toff (not a toffee)!
January 26, 2026 at 9:47 PM
But it will still be known as the fridge door! Just wonderful that the progress that has been made means the fridge on Anchor is now too small!
January 23, 2026 at 8:04 AM
I'm Stella cos she is the first Kakapo I saw (on her way back south after care at Wellington Zoo). But more generally I'm for the Class of '11 and it is good to see the three boys making a contribution!

Was expecting Kuia to be one of the first to nest on Pukenui. I missed Marian - who did she mate with?
January 20, 2026 at 8:57 AM
I take it cults is a typo!
January 20, 2026 at 3:42 AM
So Kohengi/Kotahitangi x 2 then?
January 17, 2026 at 8:47 AM
Good to see both birds I sponsored in project 125 - Bluster Murphy and Stella have been involved in the early action!
January 15, 2026 at 6:20 PM
Is Ralph still without offspring?
