Footnotes should only have info about the source in them. They shouldn't be used to add extra text, its just bad writing, as it breaks the flow. It's like trying to follow 2 conversations at the same time. I've given up on a lot of books partway for just this reason.

I have just listened to this episode and would love to recommend a 'survival' story featuring a woman. 'A Woman in the Polar Night' was written by the Austrian painter Christiane Ritter and is her account of how she made a life for herself and her husband through the winter of 1933 in the arctic.
