Jagmeet Singh was in his third year of law school when everything came tumbling down. His father’s drinking had gotten so out of control that he lost it all; his job, his savings, the family home and his ability to support Singh’s two younger siblings. So Singh stepped up as best he could, taking in his kid brother Gurratan while juggling part time jobs and a full course load at York University. At a time when most of his classmates could focus solely on their studies and social lives, Singh had to be back at the apartment every night, cooking for Gurratan and making sure the 15-year-old’s homework was done. By the time he graduated, at 26, Singh was thrust into his father’s place at the head of the household. “I was the sole provider. I was 26 and I was the one paying the mortgage, putting food on the table and supporting my family,” Singh told The Rover. “I remember what it’s like when things are tough. When I was in university, if I didn’t work, if I didn’t have any money coming in, it wasn’t me that wasn’t eating, it was my kid brother too. I remember that fear.

Nothing was resolved. And something about Dick’s behavior—his secrecy about the camp’s finances, his opinions on how the Bass proceeds should be allocated—made Stacy suspicious. Though Dick and James had land appraisals, they had never shared them with Stacy, so Stacy decided to get his own. He had an inkling that Dick wasn’t following the rent formula he’d devised in 1998. Sure, the rent had gone up almost every year, by exactly $10,000. Stacy and the other NFP members had gladly cashed their checks, no questions asked. But when Stacy got numbers back, his fears were confirmed: Land values and construction costs had gone up significantly in the Hill Country since he’d created the formula, but the rent payments had increased only 2.5 percent per year. Dick hadn’t used appraisals to calculate his rent, as Stacy had long ago instructed him; instead, he’d picked a rent number based on the first year of the lease arrangement and simply added $10,000 more each year. In other words, Dick and Tweety had been underpaying rent while paying themselves ever higher salaries. In 2006, for instance, they brought home almost $1 million combined. Stacy was stunned. His brother, it appeared, owed at least $2.8 million in back rent.

By the mid- to late eighties, camps across the nation were confronting the very expensive problem of personal injury suits. Suddenly a camper accident—or, worse, a camper death—could spell ruin. Something had to be done. When Seaborn died, in 1990, finding a solution fell to Stacy.

Finally, the claim that before some point in the 1980s or 1990s, autistic people were unseen and absent from school and society, is not only to erase the complicated truth of our own histories, but to reinforce some of the very misperceptions we claim to oppose. It carries an implication that those of us who did have lives in our communities, or who were sitting in school, weren’t really autistic. That perhaps we were the “very high functioning,” or “just quirky,” but that noticeably disabled autistic people would’ve been institutionalized. And it’s not only not true, it inadvertently reinforces assertions of autism epidemic proponents who insist that anyone truly autistic would necessarily be readily identifiable as such.

Parents push back on pediatric guidelines Parents of children with Long COVID who spoke with The Sick Times had concerns over CAN-PCC’s pediatric guidelines, which they said could lead to more poor care, like that their children had received from doctors who treated their symptoms as psychological. Several researchers who designed the pediatric guidelines are affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, or SickKids. It’s one of the largest pediatric hospitals in Canada and has a notorious reputation among parents of kids with Long COVID. According to parents who spoke with The Sick Times, doctors often referred children to psychiatric care for what they described as physical symptoms of Long COVID. Many parents were concerned to speak on the record because they feared retaliation. Nadini Raj, a parent of a child with Long COVID, has been outspoken about her criticisms of the CAN-PCC pediatric recommendations. Late last year, she sent a letter on behalf of a group of 20 parents and clinicians to the CAN-PCC leadership team with their concerns. Of the 13 members on the Pediatric & Adolescent Guideline Group, seven are affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children, and “have a reputation in the community for gaslighting children and adolescents living with LC/PCC,” Raj and her fellow letter-writers wrote. “This recommendation reinforces existing barriers that our children experience in doctor’s offices across Canada. Specifically, that our children’s symptoms are ‘all in their head.’”
