Both stories rhyme: finding ways to impose costs without calling them taxes. The irony is sharper in the macro case — GOP leaders oppose raising corporate tax rates, yet embrace targeted extractions that look and act like taxes while giving the White House more control.

On the macro level, the administration’s “corporate interloping” means extracting value from large firms — like taking a cut of Nvidia/AMD’s China sales or converting CHIPS grants into equity. Again, taxation without the “T-word.”

On the micro level, businesses hit by tariffs are adding surcharges, service fees, or “sustainability” charges to pass costs on to consumers. It’s a tax in all but name — just hidden in the bill instead of the sticker price.

Many businesses can no longer afford to eat the cost of tariffs. But raising sticker prices is usually a last resort, so they're looking for other ways to make up for it, like cutting free shipping, adding return fees and tacking on charges at checkout.
