I love autumn ❤️

Very excited to see that a flutter of gorgeous silver-studded blue butterflies has emerged on the same little patch of Dorset heathland as last year.

Rather lovely new adornment to the railway bridge this morning.

Very privileged to have a close encounter with a magnificent heron this morning, a reward for completing my accounts and tax return 😍.

The fungus season continues to produce bounties, including a magical fairy ring in the dark gloom of a wood this morning.

The pigeons are drying out after yesterday's deluge.

My favourite tree was looking freshly washed in the sunshine this morning 😍

An upside to the current sogginess is the abundance of fungi - so difficult to pick my favourites.

Seems quite late in the year to see a stag beetle.

Thank you @drrjwarren.bsky.social. Having bought this book last week, I've already enjoyed spotting bees on ivy and learning about the origins of horse chestnuts. I'm looking forward to continuing through the microseasons 🙂.

Thanks to the Digitithe Hampshire Project, I know that Henry Hubbard leased the land on which my house now stands in 1842, but I'm unhappy to read that his son shot a honey buzzard with "beautiful plumage" here. At least it was sent to "one of the best bird stuffers in his part of the kingdom"!

I'm supposed to be thinking/writing about early modern clerical families, but the fungi around here are distracting architectural miracles.
