Trying to imagine a scenario in which Biden had what appear to be monthly transfusion bruises on both hands and the press ignoring them.

Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

I saw a thread on that here some time ago in which some journalists were down-playing the importance of the headlines, saying stuff like "people should read the entire article" and "if people are only getting their news from the headlines we have bigger problems". Like, yes, obviously, but JFC.

It never fails to amaze me that journalists don’t fight harder for control over the headlines attached to their articles, knowing that it’s next to their name and that it’s the words the most people will actually read.

The Tea Party never reached the magnitude of No Kings. Yet it was covered as if it represented “real America,” just like MAGA today. Those are not empirical assessments, but articles of faith – ideological claims about the world that are widely shared in the American mainstream discourse.

Just like when the New York Times did not think the No Kings protests were all that significant, this is indicative of how much mainstream institutions have bought into the idea that only Trump and his supporters represent “real America” and have a right to have their voices amplified.
