Hey friends! I just started my new job (for which I moved to a different country 😱) as a Level Designer at GRIP Studios in Prague. ✨🎮

Look at this cute little* gladiator figure I found at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne.

Watched "Universal Language" by Matthew Rankin & played "Mouthwashing" by Wrong Organ this weekend. Both incredible in their own unique ways!

Read both previous books by Schreier and loved them, his third did not disappoint my high expectations. Covering the over 30 years that Blizzard has been around gives not only a rare look behind the curtain but also a lot of context to recent developments and the direction the industry is heading.

Focuses on emotions and their relationship to design. Starting with examples from product design, covering “The Devious Side of Design” in sales and later even emotional robots. As in Norman’s other books, his principles and thinking can be taken holistically and applied to design as a whole.

The roughly 200 pages cover most of the typical obstacles a game dev will encounter & offer solid advice on topics like motivation and scope. Great lil comics! Imo it fits neatly into the category of books that the “101 Things I Learned in…”-series or Max Pears’ “Let’s Design:…”-series falls into.

Covers different parts of the creative process of writers working on immersive entertainment projects and provides numerous case studies to underline its claims. Not directly about games but was a great to take a peek behind the curtain of this industry and offers a lot of
transferable knowledge.

Carillo managed to not only concisely characterize things like design skills at different levels of seniority, but also gives some great advice on problem solving, vision statements, and design methodology.

Very much looking forward to the next book in the series!

Only covers most areas very roughly. Especially when comparing it to other LD-books some sections read quite amateurish/outdated. Felt like the planning process and levels were rarely considered in the context of entire games.

Written in a pleasant format, with digestible paragraphs accompanied by a couple of illustrations and graphs. Lemarchand offers further resources like playtest survey templates or examples for folder hierarchy on his website. “A Playful Production Process” belongs imo on every designer’s bookshelf!

Finished "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle"
a few days ago and it was an absolute blast. Loved the level design and the insane amount of cool props!
The game also has some genuine comedic moments that emerge during gameplay. Hope Xbox will let MachineGames make a sequel🙏

Tonight I saw the original Nosferatu (1922) with a live score by "Interzone perceptible". Incredible how well this movie still works over 100 years after its initial release. (Apart from a few goofy lines) ⚰️🦇

Visited the local theme park as part of the studio's Christmas party (I'm living the dream of every 5-year-old) and found this collection of "default video game props" standing in a deserted corner near a queue. 📦⚱️

Had the honor of attending the German premiere of "All We Imagine as Light" by Payal Kapadia today. Wonderful composition, terrific lighting, and a genuinely touching story about love, destiny, and sisterhood. Make sure to see it at the cinema if you get the chance!
