The Canadian Residential School System was a system invented by white Canadians to assimilate indigenous children by removing them forcefully from their culture and put into boarding schools. This system was funded by the government and lasted for 160 years until 1997. Somewhere between 3,000 and 30,000 children died from abuse and starvation, but because records were destroyed and bodies dumped in unmarked graves on school lands, the true number.will never be known. This system seems to be a blind spot for Canadians when they self reflect and end up confusing politeness with niceness.

A spectrum for the Festival of Lights
A hanukiah with all eight candles lit. The candles are colored orange, yellow, light blue, deep blue and violet and arranged in the order of wavelength, with shorter on the left (violet) and longest on the right (orange). An electromagnetic spectrum has a range of colors, and a community has a range of traditions, beliefs, and rituals. There is commonality which defines a minimum and binds. But there is a difference of expression and experience which differentiates. A spectrum also calls to mind the Robert Silverberg novel “To Open the Sky,” which opens with the Stations of the Spectrum: “Tell us now the stations of the spectrum. Blessed be long radio waves, which oscillate slowly. Blessed be broadcast waves, for which we thank Hertz. Blessed be shortwaves, linkers of mankind, and blessed be microwaves. Blessed be infrared, bearers of nourishing heat. Blessed be visible light, magnificent in angstroms. (On high holidays only: Blessed be red, sacred to Doppler. Blessed be yellow, hallowed by Fraunhofer gaze. Blessed be green. Blessed be blue, for its hydrogen line. Blessed be indigo. Blessed be violet, flourishing with energy.) Blessed be ultraviolet, with the richness of the sun. Blessed be x-rays, sacred to Roentgen, the prober within. Blessed be gamma, in all its power; blessed be the highest of frequencies.”

More light than darkness.
A hanukiah on the fifth night of Hanukkah with five candles lit. There are more lit than unlit spaces now, so there is “more light than darkness.” Fun date math trivia: the fifth night can never fall on Shabbat. In the context of the sacred-profane dichotomy, turning the tide always comes in the everyday world with all of the hiccups, barriers, supply chain issues, insecurity, and infighting that entails. Reaching the tipping point is never a place where the time has been set aside and free from distractions, the table prepared and set, the invites sent out. It meets where we are, in the real world, warts and all.

A tale of two skeets. Served randomly by the universe to appear one after the other, although not connected by design. The first is from LOLGOP, where someone unnamed writes in all caps, HOW DARE YOU CALL ME, A MAN ADJUDICATED AS HAVING COMMITTED SEXUAL ASSAULT, WHICH THE JUDGE HAS SAID WAS ESSENTIALLY RAPE, A “RAPIST?” ABC, the network, cowardly responds “Fair. Here’s $15 million.” The second is from Insult Bot, which writes “You odious dollop of opinionated ape snot.” It could apply to either party in the first skeet.

While boomers got lead exposure, Gen-X has the highest total lead exposure over their lifetime.
A chart where the X axis is age in 2015, and the Y axis is percentage of population. Color coding in seven bands describes the childhood blood lead levels in micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood. The highest band is greater than 30 micrograms per deciliter and encompasses all of the Gen X age bracket, peaking at about 6 percent of the Gen X population. The second highest lead exposure band is is 25 micrograms per deciliter of blood and also peaks at about 6 percent of the Gen X population. Lead exposure declines with time so the highest exposure band of greater than 30 micrograms per deciliter is gone with the youngest Gen X member. This highest exposure band is in about 3 percent of the Gen X population with the oldest Gen X members. The oldest Boomers have this maximum level of childhood exposure around 2 percent of the Boomer population for the youngest Boomers. The oldest Boomers would have been 70 in 2015, and don’t have this highest exposure band at all, and less than 1 percent of the second highest exposure band.
