Makes the egg easier to eat this way. You peel off the shell only from the top, use a spoon to get through the white to the yolk, dip the bread into the runny yolk, then use the spoon to eat the rest of the egg from inside the shell. Kinda like this

Thanks for responding 🙂. I didn't interpret the book that way but can see why you did. I was mostly angry when I read the book. Angry about the cruelty, angry that I wasn't taught anything about the Great Migration and that this is the way I learned.

I didn't LIKE it per se but as someone who did not grow up in the US and had just moved to the South, it gave me a peek into how living under Jim Crow was like, why some people left the South, and what happened when they moved to other cities.
