Wow, by lowering the length (draw distance) of Godot's volumetric fog, you can get a really crisp effect with good performance. Technically there's nothing stopping you from recreating the opening cloud scene from Black Myth: Wukong using this system.

Needed Disco Elysium style dialog for a hobby project, luckily they posted a nice promo article for the dialog management software they used, called Articy Draft. Eventually I was able to recreate the basic concept in Godot.
