The story is actually about a woman who crosses into a fantasy world, and is mistaken by the small town she ends up in to be there to apply to be their Matchmaker. In an unexpected turn of events, her first job ends up being to find a match for Frank.

At the most basic level, it's about two kingdoms caught in an extended (30+ years) war that is ruining both kingdoms, in no small part due to Deodar, to whom the conquest of the other kingdom becomes an obsession. Obviously there's a lot going on beneath the surface.
