This is why I'd say the dislike of small talk is rarely an objection to, or a misreading of, scripts. It's from regularly seeing such scripts deployed perfunctorily.

Small talk is about form; genuine care is about intent. But folks can't mindread intent.

For example, out of the mouths of babes:

But is "a serious 'but how are you doing?" still small talk anymore? That's usually an invite to segue to a deeper talk.

Thanks! I checked and was definitely on a 3rd party one by skyfeed (used by 26K users). So I switched to the official one (used by 4.5K users), but that one doesn't go back more than 5 hrs. O_o;;

What gets lost in talks of "moving on" is how we don't all face the same consequences. Like how those who inflict harm (or benefited from it) gain the most from ignoring the harmed and dodging accountability.

This imbalance is why we've got issues in the first place.
