In case you've never seen Disney's Onward, this is Barley Lightfoot. This movie was the first time I realized that elves didn't have to be twinks, it also showed elves that weren't reclusive forest dwelling elitists. I think that subversion of expectation largely influenced my design choices.

Fat men in media are often the comic relief or the sexless best friend. I wanted to see someone built like me as a fully realized competent character and as the protagonist's main love interest. So. I wrote him. Inspired by Halsin and Barley Lightfoot. A'eryn is an elf with some meat on his bones.
