The SoundEye Festival is back! 4-6 July 2025 In Shandon Studios, Cork City, and University College Cork. Breaking the long silence which followed the last festival, our twenty-first, in 2017, we’re very pleased to announce that SoundEye is back with another shindig this coming summer, on the weekend beginning 4th July 2025. As we’re still up to our gizzards in arranging performance venues and accommodation, this is only a preliminary notice. Details, including the timetable of events, will follow asap. For now, we just want to let you all know it’s definitely happening, and to give you a notion of the shape of it. — In 1882, work first started on the Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s art nouveau masterpiece in Barcelona, Spain. The basilica is still under construction today. A few years later in 1892, work commenced on another, less well known but no less ambitious project; the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (TLL), the most authoritative scholarly dictionary of Latin in the world – also a work in progress. When finished, the dictionary will not only be the world’s largest Latin lexicon, it will also be the first dictionary to cover all Latin texts from the classical period up to 600 AD. While many dictionaries focus on the most popular use and meaning of a word and quote examples selectively, the TLL aims to document practically all surviving occurrences of every meaning of every Latin word. Written in Latin, dictionary entries are complex, multi-layered biographies of words which can take years to research and write. The completion date for the Sagrada Familia is said to be 2026 whereas the TLL team predict the dictionary could be done and dusted by 2050. With the size and scale of each project, all bets are off whether either deadline is made. —

Katy falls sick by the walnut trees, by the hazel trees, by the nut‐tree grove. Her mother asks her where’s the pain. Not my head, not my heart. My head doesn’t hurt, my heart doesn’t hurt. Mother have my heart cut out, my calling heart, my joy. Have it cut out, pack it up in a case and carry it safe to the shop. When they ask you what you sell, say it’s Katy’s calling heart, her joy.

Explained Ahmed: “When we got to the site, a quadcopter was flying overhead, showing us where the bodies were buried. We received a sign pointing to the graveyard from the drone. We were shocked to learn that the designated site was far from the one where we had previously been informed the bodies were interred. At that moment, we recognised that they had been attempting to delay, procrastinate, and waste our time the first [few days]. . . . “We started digging right away, discovered a body, and recovered it. We dug out another body that we found underneath. We then found a third body underneath. We dug further until all of the Red Crescent and Civil Defence personnel’s bodies were found in the same hole. The body of an UNRWA employee was the only one still missing. We asked OCHA about its location, and they told us that it was close to the ‘barracks’ area, west of Rafah. The bodies had distinct features, but they were in the early stages of decomposition. When they were examined, it was evident that a barrage of bullets had struck them. Based on my observations, the injuries were located in the chest region. A closer look revealed that some of the victims had still been alive despite their injuries—they were apparently buried alive with their feet bound. “Among the bodies we looked at was Ibrahim al-Maghari’s. His body was covered in severe bruises and showed evidence of torture, and his legs seemed bound. After being shot in the back of the head, his face was completely ripped apart. Regarding Fouad al-Jamal’s body, he was shot in the head from a very close distance, causing his skull to shatter,[giving the appearance of] crushed bones. We discovered that every employee of the Palestinian Red Crescent had been shot in the left and right sides of the head.

I'm in Glasgow right now, and looking forward to participating in this two-day symposium on Jerome Rothenberg, doing tribute to his work, starting tomorrow. His performance at SoundEye in 2009 was one of our high points. There are rumours this event is to be recorded and streamed.

As he writes in ‘Letters from Yaddo’, ‘If it’s done with truth and love and no wish to profit, in any sense, then it will take shape’.
