There’s a lot of white space across the field, but Seattle’s got the biological & computational chops to paint in the future. It’s an industry that will shape the rest of this century—what a thrill to watch it launch from our own backyard here in the PNW.

Yet for others, Mark Lassier’s future for protein design is now. At Arzeda, scientists iterate between wet lab and computational teams to build the enzymes making everyday products better–for everyone–right now. They’re in the grocery store, on your kitchen shelf, and under your sink.

For most, medicine was top-of-mind. The first 1/4 century saw a shift from predicting shape to building structures to target a particular biological function. The panel noted a binder is not a therapy, and we’re perhaps another 25 years (or more) from churning out IND-ready molecules.

That’s just how an event celebrating the first ¼ century of protein design kicked off this Tuesday in Seattle. Leaders of the AI protein pack from Xaira, Arzeda, Monod Bio, Archon Biosciences and Vilya gathered to share a retrospective and their vision for the future of AI-designed proteins.
