Author of the novels Stone Road, Day Boy, the Death Works series, and the Roil Duology. Also the picture books The Giant and the Sea, and Mr Impoppable. Co-creator with Brent Wilson of the Frog, Log and Dave graphic novels (Bk1 out March 2025)
And Hugh Cook’s Chronicles of an Age of Darkness while they’re at it. Great books that have interesting conversations with Jack Vance’s Dying Earth books.

Just putting it out there that someone needs to publish a new edition of Nifft the Lean by Michael Shea.

I have a new book coming out. It’s a graphic novel about a Frog, A Log, and a Dave. They’re musicians who become delivery drivers after a freak storm destroys their instruments.

Haven’t seen Will Sheff play in over a decade. This gig was good for my soul.

Much fancier set up these days. Though I’ve had that mug since the 90s.

I’m so delighted with this illustration for “We Cross the Bright Blue Water” by Simon Cottee. Tiny Owl Workshop make beautiful things, and seeing art made from your words never gets old. And this picture somehow sums up my whole body of work.

Anyway, that’s a rather abbreviated look at a thirty-year writing career. I guess I’m still here and I’m still writing, and I still love the process, and books and sharing stories, so I’m going to count it as a success.

Let's end with another goofy author photo reading at an event.

Then came my second picture book, this time with Larrikin, and illustrated by the megatalent Brent Wilson. It’s called Mr Impoppable and was published in 2023.

Back to the Stone Road, which was published by Brio and Erewhon books in 2022. To say that this book was troubled, is to put it mildly. But I am proud of it, and it won an Aurealis Award for best horror novel (my second in that category)

Then I decided to take The Stone Road, but while I was writing it I decided to follow a few sentences down a hole and came up with The Giant and the Sea. My climate change children’s book, illustrated so beautifully by Rovina Cai.

Along came Day Boy, and I found a way to merge my love of short fiction with novels. Also got to write about vampires. This book won two Aurealis Awards, and sold about that many copies. (actually it’s earnt out in Australia and the US).

Then I sold Roil to Angry Robot, the first of the Nightbound Land series. Neither, ahem, did as well as hoped. I love both of these series, they taught me how to write novels. But also, they taught me what was important to me story wise. I don’t think I could write them now.

I started to focus on actually writing novels. It took a while, and a lot of false starts. But I finally sold the Death Works Series to Orbit. Starting with Death Most Definite.

I also sold as part of a series the story “The City and the Stony Stars” unfortunately it was pulled from publication about two months out. Sales of the earlier books hadn’t been great. This was my first foray into kid’s book, and to say I was disappointed is putting it mildly.

The 90s and early 2000s were a bit of a blur, lots of short fiction published, a bit of editing, and lot of working in bookshops. Then my collection Reserved for Travelling Shows came out in 2005. And I won my first Aurealis Award.

This is what a writing career can look like. I've been doing this for a while now. My first published short story was to Eidolon way back in the mid-90s. It was illustrated by Shaun Tan, and it's still one of my favourite bits of art. Look at this young idiot - all of 21.
