This is a close-up portrait I took of Pyewacket, my blue-grey mink ragdoll. He is peeking from a grey carpet-lined hole in the top bed of our cat tree. With blue eyes staring into the camera, his white whiskers and creamy, smokey, fluffy, grey-striped hair plumes around his sweet face. I asked him for this photo, and he was very pleased with it. Yes, I showed it to him, and he gave this image a slow blink. When I announced the opening is now called a Pye hole, he smiled. This portrait inspired my haiku for today: bright nexus warm cat tree presents a Pye hole

Short story in ALT: ⬇️
Here is a shot of Sassy the squirrel, outside my writing window. The momentary pause of insult barking allowed me to take a seemingly serene nature photo. But don’t be fooled; this grey bark licker is giving me the stink eye. It’s a bright day—light through tender leaves frames the scene, and our forest beyond is a lovely blurred backdrop. Sassy is leaning hunched on the poplar limb, all hands and feet gripped tightly to the bark. This side-body-view shows the elegant curl of its fluffy tail, hooked beneath the limb for balance. Sassy’s black almond-shaped eye stares into your soul. Bonus story: Five years ago, I received daily belligerent visits from this fluffer-nutter. Each morning, I’d wake and peacefully start the day with a few paragraphs before breakfast, and Sassy would watch me while barking and doing an interpretive bristle-tailed shuffle along the limb. One blustery day, the south wind snatched a peanut from those teensy hands. The wild-eyed rodent thrashed around afterwards like it was a premeditated assault. Which led to my free verse haiku: Beyond My Curtain Gust steals nut Evening the score Squirrel breaks wind I will say this about Sassy: “That squirrel passionately barked up every tree, and made our world chuckle.” I miss the long walks we’d take together. With one eye peeled for a drop assassination, I strolled as Sassy stalked me with the bare minimum of twig snaps and rustling leaves. When I paused, taking a photo, barking would echo down from above. Our loving rivalry will never be forgotten.

Here is a portrait photo that I took of Beethoven, our long-haired orange tabby, napping in a sun puddle. His golden fur holds light like autumn wheat, warm and soft in the morning stillness. With his face squished against the floor, whiskers reflecting, and fuzzy limbs stretched, he looks so peaceful and content. The shadowed black corner hutch on the left, and silver table on the right, create a monochrome backdrop that makes our gingerbread loaf all the more stunning and bright. This moment inspired my new 3-5-3 haiku: Love Gift of love Window purrs open In my soul

This is a macro nature photo I took of an Orienpet lily. My shallow focus spotlights the crushed velvet of its purple stigma, vertically sweeping upward from a green stroke of stem, tilting right. Soft surrounds of pollen-weighted anthers blur into the bokeh as two fuchsia petals part the background, revealing a triangle of darkness beyond. Here is a macro photo I took of our last bi-color snapdragon in the front garden. The day was beautifully grey and rainy. Though there was no chance of seeing a tropical sunset, this flower held the might of dusk's glory in its misty face. This scoop of autumn sherbert glows against green peeps of background bokeh. Bending in for a closer look with my camera, I became enchanted by the perfect spheres scattered across its pink-red-orange-yellow petals. Within each crystal ball raindrop, a small universe of color and light. Their augury? My new 3-5-3 haiku: Snapdragon Vivid glow Drops of sky roll on Dragon's tongue

Golden Ribbon is a landscape photo I took on horseback, riding along a dirt road. To the left, a honey-gold meadow sways. On the right, a green line of forest is accented by red maples, dotting the distance. A dirt road with its median of tawny grass, growing between the tire tracks, cuts through both scenes and disappears into the woods ahead. Above, the sky is a gradient of cerulean to light blue. A macro nature photo I took of mistflowers near our forest line. These fringed fireworks are a herald of autumn. Always a delightful surprise, so delicate, wispy, and bright—even their berrylike disk florets are stunning. I shot this at an angle, to show off the variations of its floral tiers. Before the vast meadow, their periwinkle glow stands out against a green grass bokeh.

Orange Daylilies remind me of home. We've always had them in the front yard, and loyally, they bloom every Summer. This is a macro nature photo I took of water droplets along one of the green buds, facing an open lily. Within a lower drop, the flower can be seen, magnified, highlighting details blurred by the bokeh.

Here is a macro nature photo I took of a very scrappy blue tiger swallowtail, on a purple butterfly bush, in the front yard. I’m convinced that their wings are black and blue to match their fistacuff souls. This capture happened right after it flutter-thrashed a yellow swallowtail that tried to take the flower away. It was the most beautiful “Flight Club” fight I’ve ever seen. Who knew butterflies could be so brutal? Entomologists. It is not surprising that their wings have tears, scratches, and holes.

Side light casts in from the right, catching the colorful glitter and brightening the delicate fukien petals. For reference: this flower is roughly the size of a peppercorn.

A seascape photo I took in St. John. The orange dawn woke me from Caribbean dreams. Sheer clouds veiled the sun, casting on the island's ochre mountains below. Silhouettes of ships, gulls, buildings, a lighthouse, and jetties dot and frame the glistening ocean. A blazing column of golden light dazzles the surface of the sea, announcing the suns ascension.

This is a black and white portrait I took of Luno the Tabby, my handsome feral rescue cat. When I photograph in the forest, he watches over me. The most handsome protector I could ever hope for. Once he stepped into the light, I couldn't help but take this shot. The way the grass lit up around him as he approached, what a striking figure he struck before the old weathered fence and the soft swaying trees.

I awoke as fog rolled over the spring mountain, and took this landscape photo deep within the Primland forest. In wavering veils, the understory blinked in and out of its mossy bed. Half monochrome, half green—a white softness layers the distance with ghostly limbs. How hauntingly beautiful the saplings were in their slender splays of sleepy branches, appearing and disappearing like dendritic secrets.

Here is a nature photo I took over the forest after a short thunderstorm. This prism appeared as the grateful evening reveled in its stormy delights. This single hot pink blossom holds dewdrops each morning—they collect along its 6 petals like tiny crystal balls. I took this landscape photo at the foot of Denver's Rocky Mountain range. I'm guessing that the half-covered peak is Mt. Meeker? The snowstorm rolled in so quickly, it was difficult to identify without a pinnacle for reference. The scene was primarily monochromatic, and choosing black-and-white proved easy. The sweeping clouds, highlighted in morning light and shadowed by storm, add mystery to the dramatic rocky ridges laced in snow.

A macro nature photo I took of my Jack A. Sand Azalea after late-day rain. The whole world sparkled, even droplets in the shadows caught light and glistened. This one blossom stood out beneath the rest, dappled in evening light. The glitter of its white-pink-peach petals highlights the raindrops, and its singular red stamen swoops outward holding its green tip like an offering. The background is a shadowy bokeh with green flecking. The misted stems and buds surrounding the main flower lift toward the upper left frame.

Here is a macro nature photograph I took of the Mimosa blossoms, blooming in my backyard. We planted this Mimosa 7 years ago. This is its first year blooming, and it decided to do so on my father's birthday. What a very special year for a very special tree. The hot pink stamen filaments look like fireworks against the soft blue and purple bokeh of the background. Pops of blurred pink hint at more surrounding blossoms. Its green buds peep and hide around the flowers like verdant mines about to burst into bloom.

Indoor natural light macro photo I took of my Rabbit Track (Maranta leuconeur) blooming little white flowers with a purple center. They look a lot like a tiny Pansy Orchid. It vibrantly stands out amid the mossy green bokeh of leaves in the background. In the light, its delicate petals have a pinch of glitter to them. It started blooming last year and does so on and off during the Spring and Summer.

Tee-hee, here, I'll give you a hand! 🤣🤝💙 The best advice I can give is that hands are a combination of circles, connected lines, and rounded blocks. Once you have the structure and perspective lightly laid out, you refine the hand and then finalize its outer shape. 🫴✏️
