When people think “fall colors,” San Diego County usually doesn’t come to mind. But there’s color to be found if you know where to look. These poplars were popping Wednesday near Lake Cuyamaca. Black oaks in the county mountains turn a vibrant yellow, & they should peak in early November. #trees

The floss silk tree (Ceiba speciosa) dresses up for Halloween with big, beautiful blooms - and spikes on its branches. It's a native of the tropical and subtropical forests of South America, but many floss silks thrive in San Diego County. This one is in Escondido. #trees

A beautiful, big (70 feet tall) western sycamore in Escondido's Kit Carson Park. Sycamores are native to California. In nature, they are usually found near rivers and streams. #trees

The USDA Forest Service has maintained the National Forest Inventory program since 1928. Fast facts about San Diego’s trees: 
4.9 million trees (at least 1-inch in diameter ) are estimated to be growing in the city. 
These trees store about 289,000 tons of carbon, valued at $49.3 million. #trees

Jim "oak man" Crouch recently distributed the last of the more than 2,000 Englemann oak seedlings he grew from acorns starting last fall. He raised the young trees in his Escondido back yard. He hopes volunteers can help multiply his oak-spreading efforts next year. tinyurl.com/yc532zje #trees

Jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia) seem to bloom about a month later in North County than in downtown Sand Diego, where they put on a show each spring. The tree pictured is in Escondido, and the photos were taken today. The tree is a native of South America. #trees
