The summit is home to plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Its crater is massive (over 7 miles across and 2,600 feet deep) dotted with red cinder cones and ancient lava flows that make the landscape look like Mars.

• Humpbacks slap the surface in winter
• Honu (green sea turtles) nap on the sand
• Spinner dolphins leap like gymnasts
• Monk seals haul out alone, rare and endangered
• Axis deer dart across upcountry roads at dusk
