An Ocean Life started as a fable over five years ago. I was fascinated with Hawaiian legends which told the story of men spawned from sharks and the reincarnation of the dead as sharks. From this, the basic story evolved into something more grounded, less magical, but equally fantastic.

"Limitless and immortal, the 'oceans' are the beginning and end of all things on Earth.", a slight modification of Heinrich Zimmer's quote.

The advent of drone photography has brought us closer to the hidden lives of animals in their natural environment. Where white sharks are concerned, none more so than the work of the Malibu Artist:

June and July are the times of year we think of having #whitesharks along #capecod, The drone footage, bite marks on seals, and a dead whale with chunks bitten out of it all show that the White sharks are already present.

Article quotes Greg Skomal
'Sharks are here now.' Whale, seal shark bites prompt warning off Massachusetts coast
Five live receivers will be placed in waters off Outer Cape beaches to pick up movements of tagged sharks in real time.

I also wanted to write a very different shark novel, one that does not resign itself to the familiar horror tropes. It is still a terrifying tale.

When I wrote "An Ocean Life", my goal was to disrupt both the protagonist's and our own anthropomorphic view of the world. Imagine if your life is suddenly upended in such a way that none of your experiences could prepare you for the isolation of existing and surviving in the deep ocean.

Some visualizations I created of scenes from my novel An Ocean Life . I used various tools to mesh CG imagery, AI and real content.

We often look to the stars when we think of something as truly alien. But all we need to do is look beneath the waves. 80% of the oceans are still unknown to us. The oceans represent everything that is unattainable, mysterious, frightening and wondrous.
