As a law enforcement family this just breaks my heart and just so damn angry. I can’t even imagine what they and their families must be feeling.

I, admittedly, have been less optimistic as I now find that my name and my vote are on the list of voters the NC GOP are attempting to disenfranchise. I haven’t had the heart to tell my daughter that our great voting endeavor might yet be struck down by a sore loser.

Over the next few days, as election results rolled in, she experienced the complicated feelings that come with finding out elections went the way we wanted—or didn’t. She handled each outcome with a grace and optimism I find enviable in today’s world.

Fast forward a few weeks later, and on Election Day, I had a candid conversation with my daughter again—this time about how we don’t always win every election. We talked about the importance of being gracious winners and good losers, a concept she hears often in kindergarten.
